Whether their preference is pastels, oils or acrylics, participants of the Kingsport Art Guild’s upcoming spring workshop will be treated to two full days of camaraderie, stories, learning and growth.
Artist Ray Hassard will lead “Painting Town & Country” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, April 28 and 29 in Room 239 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center.
Cost is $295 for KAG members and $330 for non-members. The non-member fee includes a one-year trial membership in the art guild. Deadline for down payment ($75 for members and $85 for non-members) is Feb. 28.
Hassard will begin the workshop with thumbnail compositions and value studies that help artists determine and emphasize the concept behind their painting. He will help participants see and arrange big shapes, separate the painting into light and dark, and “flesh out” the painting with values, color and edges, with a special emphasis on placing buildings and other structures in the landscape for best effect. He will also discuss the advantages and dangers of working from photographs.
Hassard was born and raised in the New York area. Growing up, he attended Saturday classes at the Museum of Modern Art and took community education art classes at local schools and art organizations. He also studied at the Pratt Institute.
In 1977, Hassard moved to Buffalo, where he was awarded several commissions, including one for a 45-foot-long wall in the subway system the city was building. He and his partner moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1985 and became co-owners and publishers of “American Record Guide,” a classical music CD review magazine.
Hassard teaches pastels at Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center in Covington, Ky., and the Women’s Art Club in Cincinnati, and leads workshops around the country. He belongs to the Ohio Plein Air Society and Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, and is a signature member of the Cincinnati Art Club. He was awarded signature and Master Pastellist status by the MidAmerica Pastel Society in 2008, and served on the Board of the Ohio Plein Air Society for two terms. He was given Signature Member status by the Pastel Society of America in 2011.
