Road project resolution on tap for Wise County School Board

WISE — The Wise County School Board will consider moving forward on a project to improve traffic flow at the school division’s Big Stone Gap schools campus during Tuesday’s 6 p.m. regular session at the Education Center in Wise.

During a Jan. 30 special session, the board chose Maxim Engineering of Coeburn and Chilhowie-based W-L Construction & Paving Inc. to get first dibs at contract negotiations with the school division for a design/build traffic improvement project at the Union High School, Powell Valley Middle School and Powell Valley Primary School complex in Big Stone Gap.

The board chose the Maxim proposal over one submitted by Wise architectural and engineering firm Thompson & Litton and Jonesville-based Glass Machinery & Excavation.

Maxim and W-L Construction refer to the project as the Campus Road Project. The companies have proposed building a new, direct access point near the high school to the middle school and turning an existing connector road leading to the middle school into a traffic diverting/holding cul-de-sac to better redirect and accommodate traffic flow of both the middle school and primary school during high- traffic periods.

The project would also include special lanes for school buses only. On Tuesday, the School Board will consider a resolution to move the project forward under Virginia’s Public-Private Education Partnership Act (PPEA).
