Boone boys, girls get big boost by sweeping South

GRAY — The word of the evening was confidence, which is what Daniel Boone's boys and girls acquired when the Trailblazers swept Sullivan South in a non-conference basketball matchup Friday evening.

The boys fought off a third-quarter comeback to post a 69-62 win. The girls took advantage of late Lady Rebels turnovers to collect a 55-53 decision.

The Trailblazers’ Dylan Reppart started to sizzle late in the first quarter. He closed out the period with five straight points then opened the second with another seven in a row.

Boone led 33-24 at the half and by as many as 13 points before the Rebels mounted a run.

The 15-6 push — highlighted by two 3-points shots by Drake Crawford and seven points from Christian Comsa — pulled South to within two, 49-47, as the third period expired, but the comeback ended there.

An 11-0 run by the Trailblazers iced the victory.

“Basketball is a game of runs. We’ve played South enough to know they are a good team,” said Boone coach Ryan Arnold. “You are not going to beat them by 25 and that they are going to make a run. We didn’t really panic and early in the year as a young team we panicked.”

South could find no answer Reppart’s repertoire — his shots ranged from 3-pointers to driving inside layups — and he finished with a game-high 28 points. Zack Rafalowski added 16 points for Boone.

The Rebels had three players in double figures. Crawford had 15 points, all on 3-pointers, Comsa added 14 and Will Blair chipped in 10.

In the night’s opener, the Lady Rebels committed three crucial turnovers in the last two minutes and Boone converted all three into points.

South led 50-46 with 1:55 left before two straight turnovers and baskets by Katelyn Cox tied the game at 50.

No sooner had Cox scored when Boone stole the inbound pass and collected the foul. Courtney Vasquez’s free throw put the Lady Trailblazers up for good at 51-50. Cox added another basket and foul shot in the last minute.

Cox led Boone with 19 points and Autumn Bradshaw had 14.

Morgan Seymore topped the Lady Rebels with 14 points. Brayden Hutchins and Kayla Tipton added 11 each. Abbey Conkin tossed in 10.
