“When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.” — James 1:13-14 (NIV)
“I can resist anything except temptation,” said the great wit Oscar Wilde. It’s a refrain many of us can repeat as well. “I can have just one more cookie.” “It’s OK to sneak a quick peek at Facebook here at work.” “I can put one more purchase on this credit card.” Even the Apostle Paul struggled with this. He writes in the letter to the Romans, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” (Romans 7:15). Thanks be to God that God, who is all good, is willing to keep us from straying — if only we put down that cookie and trust Him.
Prayer: Gracious God, keep us from temptation and deliver us from evil. Give us the strength and faith to trust You so that what we do is what we love. Amen.
