“The king [Josiah] stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the LORD — to follow the LORD and keep his commands, regulations and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.” — 2 Kings 23:3 (NIV)
King Josiah was the stellar king of Judah. After successive reigns where kings devoted themselves and the people to the worship of Baal and other idols, and not the God who had made the covenant with them, Josiah comes to the throne and rediscovers the riches of the Book of the Covenant (verse 2). Today, we may not have wooden or metal idols in our churches or civic buildings, but we do have other idols — money, success, even family — that can turn us away from God. Who are the King Josiahs in our lives who remind us that the blessings of God are far greater than the blessings of idols? Who can you be a King Josiah to today?
Prayer: Holy God, we give you thanks for all those who by their words and actions remind us of Your love and grace for us. Help us to be among those who point to You. Amen.
