KINGSPORT — Grayson Ball has been the driving force for Sullivan North basketball this season.

Monday evening at Richard Carroll Gymnasium, Ball kept to form. The senior nailed a short jumper with six seconds to go in regulation to give North a 51-49 non-conference win over University High.

The winning basket was part of Ball’s 21-point, 16-rebound, four-assist evening.

“Tonight I tried to put us in position to win,” Ball said. “We came out with the mind-set that we had to get this win. It wasn’t a conference game, but it was something we needed for the team.”

The Raiders (6-16) held the Bucs (10-13) scoreless over the final six minutes of the contest.

The win overshadowed a strong scoring performance by the UH’s Marcus Taylor. Taylor scored a game-high 27 points with 23 of those in the first half.

University High used a strong first half to ease by the Lady Raiders 54-33 in the night’s first contest.

The Lady Bucs (8-12) used a stout pressure defense that went along with several North miscues to build a 32-14 halftime lead.

Things looked a little different in the second half. North (5-15) emerged from the locker room with an increased defensive effort and cut back on the turnovers.

The team was outpointed only 22-19 over the last two periods.

The scorebook showed only 10 points for Shenoah Bradley,  but the Lady Raiders freshman hustled and scrapped the entire game.

Taylor Treadway led University High with 18 points and Lexi Crouthers followed up with 14.
