Virginia hires Archer as defensive assistant

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Virginia football coach Mike London completed his staff with the hiring of Mike Archer as a defensive assistant.

Archer, who coached linebackers at Virginia under George Welch in 1991 and 1992, reunites with current Cavaliers assistant coaches Tom O’Brien and Jon Tenuta. Archer worked with both at North Carolina State, where he was the defensive coordinator from 2007-12.

Archer, 60, has 37 years of coaching experience in college and the NFL. He was out of coaching last season after being part of O’Brien’s Wolfpack staff that was fired following the 2012 season.

The school said in a release that Archer’s specific coaching assignment has not been finalized.
