Daniel Franklin Dalton, 53
KINGSPORT — A Church Hill man was arrested in Kingsport for allegedly stabbing his friend while he slept, saying he had an urge to kill him, according to a press release.
Daniel Franklin Dalton, 53, 2182 Steadman St., Kingsport and 4174 Carters Valley Road, Church Hill, was charged with attempted first-degree murder.
The incident began at 10:30 a.m. Friday. According to the Kingsport Police Department press release, Dalton went into the bedroom of his longtime friend, whom he also lived with, and began to stab him multiple times in the head and chest with a folding lockback knife. The report stated that Dalton did the stabbing suddenly and without being provoked.
The victim's wife was asleep next to him, but woke up to find Dalton attacking her husband, according to police. The victim's daughter was in the kitchen and heard a commotion coming from the bedroom and went to investigate.
Police say the two women were able to stop the stabbing and wrestle the knife away from Dalton.
Dalton stated that he felt the urge to stab his friend, so he did. Dalton allegedly said he wanted to do more and acknowledged he wanted to kill his friend, the report stated. Police reported the two were longtime friends and there was no indication of a disagreement or altercation that would have led to the attack.
The victim received multiple stab wounds and was in critical condition. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Dalton was charged with first-degree murder and transported to the Kingsport City Jail.
