BIG STONE GAP — Logan Mullins hit five 3-pointers on his way to 19 points and Union went on to pick up a 68-57 non-district win over a familiar up-the-mountain rival Wednesday.
The Raiders’ zone approach bore fruit early, contributing to the big post’s scoreless opening quarter.
Burton led 14-13 after the first, despite a pair of treys by Mullins and another from Zack Barker. Into the second, however, success on the perimeter drew the Raiders out.
Schoolcraft started scoring and getting to the line, getting seven of his 17 total points that period. Burney drained a 3 to diversify Union’s perimeter threat. Mullins hit two more that quarter, including a buzzer-beater that put the Bears up 37-29 at intermission.
A couple he didn’t make in the fourth quarter turned out to be pretty huge.
The Raiders fought it the margin down to one in a spurt that saw a steal and couple of buckets off the bench from Kelly Thompson, a timely rebound from Alex Keys and a 3-pointer from Tre Adams with 5:29 remaining in the game.
Before Burton could overtake the home squad, Union’s Tanner Hall threaded it inside to Jake Barnett, who got the three-point play. Barnett finished with seven points, eight rebounds over 13 minutes of work.
With the Bears keeping the lid on it at the other end, over the next two minutes Mullins rimmed out a pair 3-point attempts, both of which were converted into put-back buckets by Schoolcraft.
With a 63-55 advantage and three minutes remaining, Union protected the lead with a 6-for-9 showing at the free throw line.
Bryce Spears finished with eight points, handing out seven assists and grabbing four steals for the Bears (8-6). Burney distributed four assists.
Ervin Beaty, who was shadowed alternately by Burney and Hall, scored 16 points for Burton (6-8), pulling down seven rebounds. Keys scored 16 points. Austin Johnson hit three 3’s on his way to 11.
In the girls game, Kristen Bishop scored 14 points to lead the Lady Bears to a 49-41 win over Norton.
Bishop pulled down 11 rebounds for Union (8-7). Summer Begley had seven points, 11 rebounds and Hannah Dysart had eight points, five assists. Jessica Horner added nine points.
Union hit nine 3s as a team
Jaz Bay scored 18 points to pace the Lady Raiders (3-11). Yakemia Beaty added 12.
