A man with a grocery bag on his head robbed a Kingsport gold buying business on Friday night, attacking the clerk with a broom before making away with cash and jewelry.
According to a report at the Kingsport Police Department, the incident occurred at Gold Rush, 733 W. Stone Drive. A male employee told officers that shortly before 8 p.m. he was preparing to close for the day, and using a broom stick to flip off the "open" sign.
That's when a man wearing a "grocery bag" to conceal his face, and hoodie over his head, entered and demanded, "Get on the ground." The employee told police that the suspect took away the broom stick and walked behind the counter, grabbing the daily deposit and two pieces of jewelry.
The clerk reportedly attempted to intervene, prompting the suspect to strike him in the head with the broom. Police observed an abrasion to the top of the employee's head.
The clerk backed out of the way and the suspect ran from the store. A K9 unit responded to track the man, but the scent was lost just behind the building.
Police describe the suspect as a white male, approximately 6 feet 1 with a slim build. He was wearing a two-tone black and blue jacket with a hood.
