KINGSPORT — Every classroom in Kingsport City Schools soon will have a cell phone, part of a safety upgrade the city school board recently learned about.
During the Jan. 14 called Board of Education meeting, which took the place of the canceled Jan. 2 meeting, the board learned about the program in which Verizon Wireless is donating the phones with no contract.
The only charge will be a per-minute levy for calls to non-Verizon phones.
Chief Information Officer Andy True said that charge would be a small price to pay to facilitate communications in an emergency.
The phones, which True said could be used in the classroom and playgrounds, will be preprogrammed with 911, school administrator and office numbers.
The idea is to increase safety and improve communications in the case of emergencies, True said. For an expanded version of this article, please see Sunday's print edition or our expanded electronic edition.
