CHURCH HILL — It was fast start, slow finish for the Volunteer boys on Thursday as they hosted Cloudland in a non-conference basketball matchup.
The Falcons raced out to a 35-21 halftime lead then held on for dear life to eke out a 44-36 win over the Highlanders.
Volunteer (11-11) hit just two baskets over the final two periods, but did go 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of the contest to secure the victory.
David McFarland led the Falcons with 13 points while Marquise Williams added 11.
The Lady Highlanders, the No. 8-ranked team in Class A, rained 3-pointers down on the Lady Falcons and came away with a stunning 61-48 win. All told, Cloudland hit 11 treys in the contest.
It marked the third time this season that Cloudland (23-3) has beaten Volunteer (21-6).
Courtney Clarke led the Lady Highlanders with 16 points while Kendall Mull added 14 and Courtney Wilson 11.
Savannah Felgemacher was a one-women wrecking crew for Volunteer. She poured in 31 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, eight off the offensive glass.
