Cynthia A. Swafford, 26
KINGSPORT — A mother has been arrested for allegedly leaving her two children — one 7 years old, the other 17 months — home alone at 2:30 a.m. inside an unlocked apartment.
Cynthia A. Swafford, 26, of 606 East Sevier Ave., apartment 94, was charged with child neglect in the Sunday incident and booked into the city jail. She was arraigned Tuesday morning in Kingsport General Sessions Court, where an affidavit states police were responding to a "harassment complaint" when they learned of the incident.
Someone reportedly told police that Swafford was driving a Chevy Tahoe in the area of Waverly Road and had left her children unattended. At 2:25 a.m., an officer observed the vehicle turning onto Fort Henry Drive and conducted a stop.
Swafford was asked about her children being home alone. She allegedly told police they were asleep in their beds, adding that her father was at the apartment. But other officers were already at her residence, according to police, finding the young children were unsupervised.
Swafford, whose license was suspended, claimed to be driving to pick up her boyfriend. She reportedly told an officer that she "wasn't going to be gone that long" and had left her apartment door unlocked "in case something happened."
The Department of Children's Services was contacted about the incident. Swafford's father met police at her residence to take custody of the children.
Swafford is charged with two counts of child neglect and driving on a suspended license.
