Wise County School Board members to discuss sick leave, dual enrollment

WISE — A first look at calendar options for the 2014-15 school year, a dual enrollment partnership with Mountain Empire Community College and discussion over a sick leave policy for new employees will be on top of Monday’s agenda for the Wise County School Board.

The school division will present three calendar options for 2014-15. One would be similar to traditional August through May calendars, another is a “balanced” option similar to a year-round concept with weeklong breaks and remediation sessions built into the calendar, and the third a mix between the traditional and balanced options.

Another discussion item on Monday’s agenda will be consideration of a recommendation to change the school division’s sick leave policy for new employees hired after Jan. 1 of this year.

According to the board packet, the administration sees a need to modify the existing sick leave policy because of implementation of a new hybrid Virginia Retirement System (VRS) plan. The recommended changes include a maximum accumulation of sick days from unlimited to 60, allowance of a transfer of sick leave up to 60 days, and no sick leave bank for new employees.

All existing employees would be grandfathered in and would not be impacted by the policy revision, including no changes to the current sick leave bank policy.
