Couponing 101: Couponing at Target

Amanda Arnold-Drinnon

Two of the best tips for beginning couponers are:

1. Pick one department store, one grocery store, and one drug store to focus on while learning to coupon.  It can be very easy to become completely overwhelmed with all of the deals that are posted on the couponing web sites.

2. Pick one store and become familiar with their policies.

Today’s topic is couponing at Target.

So, what makes Target a great place to coupon?  They have so many ways to stack the deals, for example:

1. Target Store Coupons

These can be found in Sunday coupon inserts, occasionally on Coupons.com, Target ads, and coupons printed from Target.com.  Target coupons can be used with manufacturer coupons.  Yes, you can use two coupons on one item!  Target coupons always have the Target logo on them and will say some form of “Target Coupon” on the top, left side of the coupons.

2. CartWheel

Target’s CartWheel offers discounts of 5-50 percent off items throughout the story.  Simply add offers to your Cartwheel list, let the cashier scan the barcode on the list, and save.  CartWheel is accessible from your desktop.  Simply choose the offers that you would like to use and print your list.  When you checkout at the store, hand the CartWheel list to the cashier AFTER you have used all other coupons.  You can also use CartWheel via a mobile browser at Cartwheel.com, or download the apps from the App Store or Google Play.  After the cashier scans your CartWheel bar code, no other coupons will scan.  ALWAYS do this last.  CartWheel can be stacked with coupons.

3. Mobile Coupons

Target sends mobile coupons directly to smartphones approximately two times per month.  Target will send the coupons, which are redeemed as store coupons by scanning the barcode image on your phone.  Mobile coupons may be stacked with a manufacturer coupon but cannot be stacked with Target store coupons.

4. Target’s Reusable Bag Discount

Each time you bring a reusable bag to tote your items home, you can receive five cents per bag.

5. Gift Card Promotions

Target often has “Gift Card Promos” in their ads. When you purchase items that are part of a Gift Card Promotion, you can stack a manufacturer, a store coupon, and CartWheel on the item and still receive your gift card!  The total to meet the gift card requirement is tallied before coupons.  Gift cards can be used on your next purchase.

6. Price Cuts

Target marks price cuts with yellow signs. These will run from three to six weeks before items return to full price. Stack these discounts with coupons, and you can score some great deals!

7. Target REDCard

The Target REDCard is a debit card available through Target that will give you 5 percent off every purchase and free shipping on Internet orders.  The 5 percent even works on gift cards.

8. Clearance Markdowns

Target is famous for their clearance items, and you can still use your coupons and CartWheel on these items!  These items are usually on end caps. Target often discounts clearance items on a gradual basis, starting with 15 percent, then 30 percent, then 50 percent, and then finally 75 percent.

9. Price Matching

Target will price match competitor prices at the customer service desk.  According to Target.com: “The competitor’s ad must be local and current, and the product must be the identical item, brand name, quantity and model number. . .”

You can use manufacturer coupons in addition to the price match!

All of these are stackable with Ibotta and ShopKick discounts as well.  Now, you may be wondering what a stack looks like.  Here is an example from TheKrazyCouponLady.com:

“Yoplait Greek Yogurt, 5.3 oz $1.

Use $1/5 – Yoplait Greek Yogurt Cups, any (coupons.com)

($1/5 means you receive $1 off five cups)

Or $1/5 – Yoplait Greek Yogurt Cups from SS 1/5

(SS is an abbreviation for SmartSource Coupon inserts in the Sunday paper)

And use $1/5 – Yoplait Greek 100 Yogurt Cups, 5.3 or 6 oz, limit one coupon per person, Target Coupon – (target.com)

And use 10 percent off – Yoplait Greek 100, Target Cartwheel Offer (exp 2/8) – (cartwheel.target.com

Final Price: $0.52 each, when you buy 5”

10. Prescription Transfers:

Watch your local ad for offers for a $25 Target gift card per transferred prescription.  This is money recycling.  If you are going to pay to get it filled, why not make a little of that money back?

As always, find what works best for you.  Saving is not all or nothing.  Every little bit helps.
