Castlewood girls, Eastside boys remain unbeaten in Cumberland District play

CASTLEWOOD —  Eastside absorbed a 28-point performance from Tyler Austin on its way to a 68-58 Cumberland District win at Castlewood.

The Blue Devils senior point guard came into the game 20 points shy of a career 1,000.  He was within one when he nailed his sixth 3-pointer of the game with 5:06 remaining on the clock.

The Spartans (10-4, 5-0) had three scorers nudging 20 as they kept their district unbeaten streak going.

Matt Green scored 19 points, also pulling down nine rebounds. Derrick Caruso hit three trifectas on his way to 19 points. Ryan Milgrim, who finished with 18, hit four 3-pointers.

Wes Yeary had nine points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Ben Yates had five assists.

“This is not a typical game for us. It was kind of a slow-paced, grind it out. And I know we’re going to have to play games like this,” said Damron. “To go through the district and win some games, you’ve got to kind of adapt.”

The Blue Devils (5-4, 2-2) trailed 27-20 at the half and were within three points of the Spartans after Dakota Grizzel’s and-one with 4:21 in the third.

Caruso answered, finishing a four-point play after getting fouled outside the arc nailing a trifecta of his own. He hit another 3  at 1:51 in the quarter to put on a 10-point margin that got chewed on a little, but remained intact at the end.

Dillon Trent added 11 points for Castlewood.

In the girls game, Castlewood put together a strong second half and knocked off Eastside 55-42 to retain its own district unbeaten streak.

McKinley Isaacs scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Castlewood (9-4, 4-0).  Kacie Jessee had 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals and Caitlyn Fleming scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Erin Stanley, who was assessed with her fourth foul in the opening minutes of the third period, scored 11 points to pace the Lady Spartans (6-8, 3-1).

Kaylee Jones added 10 points for Eastside, which shot 11-for-27 from the free throw line, going 1-for-12 in the fourth quarter.
