Several reports have been filed to the Kingsport Police Department about area residents being targeted for scams, according to a KPD press release.
There have been a couple of scams, one with a phone call telling the person they have won a prize and all they need to do is pay a fee of some kind. The victim is told to pay the fee by getting a prepaid Visa card or Paypal account and providing the person with the account number and/or pin number.
The second scam involves a person calling and pretending to be a friend or family member in need of some kind of money, such as money for repairing a vehicle or bail money. The victim is told to send money immediatly.
The KPD offers some tips to avoid being scammed:
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is; Trust your instincts; never pay anything, especially in advance; be aware that it is highly unlikely for you to win a contest you haven't entered; Never give out account numbers, social security numbers, dates of birth, pin numbers or other personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call; Don't be pressured by someone saying you must act immediately or the offer will expire; Never send cash by courier or mail; If in doubt, contact a trusted financial institution or local law enforcement.
