GATE CITY — Point guard Dylan Jenkins scored 23 points and handed out eight assists — including a spectacular, and critical, feed inside to Cody Mays with 16.2 seconds remaining — and Gate City knocked off Virginia High 70-65 in a non-district basketball win over a key conference colleague.
Mays, who started out the second half by finishing a stellar transition dish from Jenkins, scored 13 points for the Blue Devils (6-3). He also had 10 rebounds.
Caleb Herron, whose two free throws with 7.4 seconds left to play put the game out of reach, scored 10 points. He went 8-for-11 from the line, handed out five assists and had five boards.
Toure Fudge brought the Bearcats within two points with 3:27 remaining with his fourth 3-pointer of the night off a kick from Noah Walker. Fudge led all scorers with 24 points.
Ben Couch added 11 points for the Bearcats (10-2). Walker, who had a team-high nine rebounds, scored 10. Eight of his points were off second-chance buckets.
In stark contrast to the nail-biter of a nightcap, the Gate City girls rolled to a 68-21 rout of the Lady Bearcats.
Jordan Gose had 16 points for the Lady Blue Devils (12-1). Morgan Gose scored 15 and Jordan Houseright added 10.
Savannah Jacobs scored 12 points to lead Virginia High (4-7), which managed only one point in the second quarter and committed 14 first-half turnovers. Gate City, which hit six trifectas as a team to rapidly expand its early lead, coughed it up four times over the same span. For an expanded version of this article, please see Wednesday's print edition or our electronic edition.
