The National Weather Service says a cold front will approach from the northwest this evening, with projected rain quickly transitioning to snow showers across the region.
A special weather statement reports snow showers are expected to linger through much of Wednesday, especially across the higher terrain of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
NWS forecasters say models continue to differ on how much moisture is associated with the incoming wintry system, so determining potential snowfall amounts through Wednesday afternoon is uncertain.
In general, light snowfall accumulations are expected, with the possibility of one to four inches in higher elevations. Some locally heavier amounts may occur over 5,000 feet.
Low temperatures around 30 degrees are expected tonight with a high of 36 on Wednesday. A low of around 18 degrees is forecast for Wednesday night.
