Kingsport man charged with attempted murder in sawed-off shotgun shooting

Greg S. Slemp, 42, 321 Hidden Valley Road, Kingsport, has been charged with attempted second degree murder and aggravated assault. The SCSO said additional charges are pending.


KINGSPORT  — Sullivan County authorities are investigating a report of a shooting on Hidden Valley Road in Kingsport on Saturday night.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting just after 6:30 p.m.

According to a report from SCSO Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart, the caller said a man with a gunshot wound to his arm had just knocked on his door asking for help.

When authorities arrived, the victim said that he was at 321 Hidden Valley Road visiting Greg Slemp when the shooting occurred, according to the report.

The victim said that Slemp became angry, pulled out a sawed off shotgun and shot him in the arm. At that point, the victim told authorities, he ran across the street to a neighbor’s house to get help, according to the report.

The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover.

When officers went to 321 Hidden Valley Road, they were unable to locate Slemp.

According to the report, witnesses said he fled the scene after the shooting occurred.

 Approximately three hours later, Slemp arrived back at his home. He was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.

Detectives are interviewing Slemp as well as other possible witnesses.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

According to the report, a 5-year-old child was also at the home at the time of the shooting. The Department of Children’s Services was notified, and the child was released to a family member.
