N.C. woman accused of beating woman with bat, abandoning her in Carter County mountains

ELIZABETHTON — The Carter County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday arrested a North Carolina woman who was accused of taking another woman to a remote mountainous section of Carter County and beating her with a baseball bat.

Doris Ann Calloway, 24, Newland, N.C., turned herself in to the Carter County Detention Center on Wednesday afternoon. She was served with an outstanding warrant charging her with aggravated assault.

The warrant was issued on Oct. 9, after Deputy Sarah McWhirter responded to a residence on Walnut Mountain Road in reference to an assault. The resident told McWhirter that she heard a knock on her door. When she answered the door, she found a woman, Heather Watson, standing on her porch, begging for help. She said Watson was clutching her arm and dragging one of her legs, and was not wearing shoes.
