KPD: Reckless driver flees police with baby in car

Dustin E. White, 23, of 1704 Jennifer St.

A reportedly "out of control" Kingsport driver slid sideways through a Walmart parking lot multiple times on Wednesday – while carrying an infant passenger in his car – then attempted to flee police.

At a nearby gas station Dustin E. White, 23, allegedly tried to bolt from his vehicle, but was pinned down and taken into custody. He faces a litany of charges, including criminally exposing an individual to Hepatitis C – the result of reportedly spitting chewed up pills on an officer.

An affidavit filed in Kingsport General Sessions Court states the incident occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. at the Walmart on West Stone Drive. A Kingsport officer in the parking lot reports hearing a vehicle quickly accelerate, then observing a Chevrolet Impala slide across several parking spaces.

The officer's affidavit states the car, later learned to be driven by White, straightened up and accelerated again, spinning the tires and sliding sideways a second time. Police characterized his car as "completely out of control," adding other vehicles and lights poles were in the area.

When the officer approached White's car and activated emergency blue lights, White allegedly fled out of the parking lot via the Lawson Street exit. He nearly struck another vehicle in the rear, according to police, then veered into oncoming traffic to enter Murphy USA Gas Station.

White tried to drive through the fuel pumps area and abruptly stopped. As he jumped out of the car and attempted to run, an officer pinned him against the side of his car.

Police report that White was "very intoxicated, belligerent and aggressive." He was cuffed and placed in a police cruiser, with officers locating two passengers in his vehicle.

One was an adult female, the other an 11-month-old girl. An affidavit does not identify his relationship, if any, to either the woman or child.

Inside White's car, officers also allegedly found a partial bottle of Jagermeister and pill bottle. Court records state the prescription was for 28 Suboxone pills, and had been filled earlier in the day. It was empty.

Police say White refused to calm down while in the back of the police cruiser, yelling and banging his head against the window. When an officer attempted to stop White from harming himself it was observed that pills were in his mouth. He then spit on the officer.

Police report White is positive for hepatitis C, while his license is suspended. He refused to consent to a blood draw and was transported to the Kingsport city jail.

White, of 1704 Jennifer St., is charged with felony reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving under the influence, evading arrest, driving on suspended, simple assault and tampering with evidence.
