KINGSPORT — Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is bringing New Orleans-style cooking to its new East Stone Drive location.
Popeyes began in New Orleans in 1972 as a restaurant called Chicken On The Run serving traditional Southern chicken.
The location was then rebranded as Popeyes after the Gene Hackman character in the popular French Connection movies and began selling spicy New Orleans-style chicken.
Buttermilk biscuits were introduced in the 1980s.
Popeyes had 500 locations by the mid-1980s. Its 2,000th restaurant was opened in Memphis three years ago.
The menu touts “a piece of Louisiana in every meal” with chicken, seafood, wraps and sandwiches, plus signature side dishes and sauces.
There is also a “Live Well” menu with items under 350 calories.
Atlanta-based AFC Enterprises is the franchiser and operator of Popeyes restaurants, billed as the world’s second-largest quick-service chicken concept based on number of units.
More than 90 percent of the company-operated restaurants are concentrated in Louisiana and Tennessee.
