Castlewood to enshrine Calvin Talford

Castlewood High School will inaugurate its athletic Hall of Fame by inducting  one of the region’s all-time greatest athletes.

Calvin Talford’s high-flying antics mesmerized basketball fans  throughout Southwest Virginia and later at East Tennessee State. He  will be recognized in a ceremony between the girls varsity and boys varsity games Friday night.  His jersey number will be officially retired.

Talford was an all-state selection in football, basketball, baseball and track in his senior year. His uncanny leaping ability remains on the VHSL record books, The state record 7-foot mark he cleared in the high jump during the 1988 Group A track and field championships remains unbroken in that classification.

In addition to being recruited to play basketball at ETSU, Talford  was also drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, going on to spend time in minor league baseball.  After graduating from ETSU, he played professional basketball in Europe.

The Blue Devils face J.I. Burton in a Cumberland District varsity showdown Friday night.
