Katherine Sullivan, 55
A Bluff City woman has been arrested after police say they found dozens of dogs and cats in "unsuitable living conditions."
The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office reports a criminal summons was issued earlier this month for Katherine Sullivan, 55, of Walnut Grove Road. She was booked into the Sullivan County jail on Dec. 17 on 28 counts of cruelty to animals, while a total of 23 cats and 12 dogs were taken from her residence and surrounding property.
In September, police received information that the animals were not being properly taken care of. A subsequent execution of a search warrant allegedly found all the dogs and cats to be dehydrated and in varying degrees of poor health.
Police say Sullivan's home was also extremely hot with no air conditioning and infested with fleas, while areas where the animals were kept was littered with trash and feces.
The seized dogs and cats are currently housed at the Sullivan County/Bluff City/Kingsport Animal Shelter in Blountville. They will remain there until Sullivan's case is settled in court.
To help with medical expenses associated with the animals, Assistant Sullivan County District Attorney Julie Canter applied for an emergency relief grant. Those efforts secured $6,950 in money earlier this month.
