Kingsport man accused of savagely beating his grandmother

Scottie Duane Salyer, 23

MOUNT CARMEL — A Kingsport man who allegedly punched his grandmother in the head about 30 times during a savage beating Friday evening remained held in the Hawkins County Jail Monday on $100,000 bond.

Scottie Duane Salyer, 23, 2204 Bloomingdale Road, Kingsport, was arraigned Monday in Hawkins County Sessions Court on charges including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and theft under $500.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday HCSO Deputy Josh Byrd responded to a domestic assault complaint on Wallen Town Road, just off of Carters Valley Road in an unincorporated area north of Mount Carmel.

Upon his arrival Byrd met 59-year-old Virginia Stout at the residence of one of her neighbors.

Stout said she had arrived home that evening to find her grandson, Salyer, sleeping on her couch. She told Byrd that when she awoke Salyer and asked him how he got into her home, Salyer became irate.

“Due to not having a phone Mrs. Stout attempted to contact someone for help via her Ipad,” Byrd stated in his report. “At this time Salyer grabbed the Ipad from Stout and threw it against pictures on a shelf. Salyer then began pushing Stout and punching her on the head.”

Stout told Byrd she was knocked to the ground several times, and several times Salyer got on top of her and stuck his fingers in her mouth in an attempt to stop her from screaming for help.

Byrd added, “Salyer at one point put his hands over Stout’s mouth and nose in an attempt to smother her. While doing this Stout told Salyer to stop, that he was going to kill her. He stated, ‘If you do not shut up I will shut you up’.”

Stout told Byrd that Salyer then placed his hands around her neck and began choking her. Stout stated that Salyer punched her in the head at least 30 times during the ordeal, and didn’t allow her to leave until he observed a large amount of blood coming out of her mouth.

When Salyer allowed Stout to leave, she ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911.

Byrd stated in his report that he observed injuries on Stout including scratches on both sides of her face, several lacerations inside her mouth, bruises on both hands and redness on her neck.

Salyer was located at another neighbor’s house on Wallen Town Road.

During a frisk Byrd allegedly found a .22 caliber pistol in Salyer’s jacket pocket which he admitted to stealing from Stout’s purse.

Salyer also allegedly admitted to ingesting four Xanax pills which were also allegedly stolen from Stout’s purse.

Salyer is next scheduled to appear in Hawkins County Sessions Court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 13.
