Fast start carries Cyclones to NPB Classic title

KINGSPORT — For the second time in three years, Elizabethton claimed the New Peoples Bank Holiday Classic title.

The Cyclones, on the strength of a 20-2 run to open the game, downed Morristown West 58-48 in Saturday’s championship game at Sullivan North.

“The key for us this weekend was starting fast in each of our games,” said Elizabethton coach Lucas Honeycutt. “West is a well-coached team so this is a very good win for us.”

Zeke Clark led Elizabethton (12-4) with 17 points and Tyler Nichols added 14. Josh Black had 16 points and Jake Logan 15 for the Trojans (6-9).

In the third-place contest, Volunteer used a 17-3 run in the second half to rally and beat Sullivan North 56-44.

Brad Halderman led the Falcons (7-8) with 13 points. David McFarland and Ethan Crawford added 11 each.

Grayson Ball had a game-high 20 points for the Golden Raiders (4-8), with teammate Trevor Williams knocking down 17.

Chuckey-Doak claimed fifth place with a 78-47 victory over Cloudland, and Cherokee beat Lee High 65-55 in the seventh-place contest.
