Rose Hill man sentenced on child porn charges

JONESVILLE  —  An Iraq war veteran who pleaded guilty earlier this month to more than two dozen child pornography- related counts was ordered to serve 15 years in prison during an appearance Friday in Lee County Circuit Court.

Kyle Andrew Perkins, 25, of Rose Hill, Va., was given a total of 35 years to serve, but Lee County Circuit Court Judge Tammy McElyea suspended 20 years of that sentence. Perkins was also ordered to serve 15 years of supervised probation upon his release and must register as a sex offender.

He must also avoid contact with children and is barred from owning a computer or accessing the Internet.

Perkins pleaded guilty on Dec. 9 to five counts of reproduction of child pornography and another 21 counts of possession of child pornography.

Lee County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shawn Hines, who prosecuted the case, said he felt Perkins’ lengthy sentence was warranted.

“We are very pleased with the fact that we think justice has been done in this case,” Hines said. “It was less than what we asked the court to impose, but it’s 15 years without Kyle Perkins being a predator in the public, and that’s a good thing. Mr. Perkins wasn’t involved in making the videos, but the simple fact of downloading them creates the market for people to make them and that’s why he should be held accountable.”

Perkins did not take the stand to testify during Friday’s sentencing hearing, but his attorney, Stephanie Chadwell, did tell the court her client had no prior convictions and had served in the U.S. Army during the Iraq war.
