CHURCH HILL — Volunteer came back from a six-point deficit at halftime to pick up a 63-57 non-conference boys basketball win over University High on Monday.
The Junior Bucs (4-6) led 36-30 after the first two quarters, but their lack of depth showed in the second half.
“Down the stretch we just simply ran out of gas,” said University High coach Justin Penley. “Our kids competed and gave ourselves a chance, but Volunteer made the key buckets when needed.”
Marquise Williams’ basket with 10 seconds to go in the third quarter put the Falcons out front for good, 55-53.
Ethan Crawford led Volunteer (4-7) with 21 points, David McFarland added 14 and Williams finished with 12.
Marcus Taylor had a game-high 23 points for University High. Luke Willoughby chipped in 16.
The girls’ game wasn’t nearly as close. Volunteer (14-3) opened a 38-11 halftime lead and substituted freely over the final two quarters of play in a 57-21 win.
Lindsey Overbey led all scorers with 15 points and Emily Armstrong added 10 for the Lady Falcons. Taylor Treadway led University High (3-5) with seven.
