CLINCHPORT — Union 6-foot-4 sophomore Jay Gavin recorded a double-double, leading the Bears with 15 points while pulling down 14 rebounds in an 81-52 non-district win at Rye Cove Wednesday night.
Gavin was probably most conspicuous when the Eagles — who trailed the entire game — made their final desperation run with a little over four minutes remaining in the game.
Rye Cove’s Uriah Addison, who led the Eagles with 27 points and six assists, had three consecutive buckets and a dish in an 8-0 burst aimed at trimming Union’s 24-point lead.
The Bears (3-0) got a baseline jumper from Cory Mullins, but basically beat back Addison’s assault with three straight press-beating passes to Gavin in the post.
Logan Schoolcraft was a bearish presence inside for Union, scoring 12 points and collecting a couple of blocks. Noah Davis added 10 points and had a couple of assists.
Beyond that, points were scattered liberally throughout the Bears lineup. Jake Barnett had nine points and six rebounds. Only Zack Barker, who pulled down six boards and blocked two shots, failed to score.
Post Jeremy Carter added 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and collected a pair of steals for the Eagles (2-2). Luke Rhoten had nine points, four rebounds. For an expanded version of this article, please see Wednesday's print edition or our electronic edition.
