Toddler's death prompts murder charge against Abingdon man

Gregory Matthew Marlow, 28

Police say an extensive investigation into the May 2012 death of a 2-year-old girl has led to the arrest of an Abingdon man.

A Wednesday afternoon press release from the Washington County, Va., Sheriff's Office reports Gregory Matthew Marlow, 28, of 13269 Fall Hill Road, is currently held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon.  He's charged with second-degree murder and held without bond.

On May 21 of 2012, police and rescue personnel responded to call of an unresponsive girl at the Washington County Fire and Rescue Squad building. Washington County, Va., Sheriff Fred Newman says the victim, age 2, had been brought there from an address at 16090 Lee Highway, apartment 1.

The child was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center by emergency personnel and pronounced dead. Newman says an investigation into the incident was launched by his department and the medical examiner's office, with consultation from the Washington County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

The results allegedly revealed that statements provided to detectives were inconsistent with findings of the autopsy, leading to the charges against Marlow.
