A gun placed in a child's book bag during a weekend shopping trip, then inadvertently hauled to school on Monday morning, has spurred charges against a Southwest Virginia woman.
Washington County, Va., Sheriff Fred Newman says Crystal Dawn Chaffin, 33, of Saltville, faces a count of reckless handling of a firearm.
Chaffin's child, a 6th grader at Glade Spring Middle School, reportedly arrived to school Monday with the weapon in their book bag.
“Our investigation revealed the weapon was placed in the child’s book bag over the weekend while the mother and child went into a store, apparently rather than leave the handgun in the vehicle,” stated Newman in a press release.
The Bristol Herald Courier reports that the student alerted his teacher when he discovered he had taken the weapon to school, while no one was in danger during the incident.
