KINGSPORT — Free throws are a fundamental in basketball.

Sullivan South’s Lady Rebels proved to be fundamentally sound Tuesday evening with a 59-49 overtime win over Happy Valley in Three Rivers Conference action.

The Lady Rebels went 14-for-16 from the free throw line in overtime to hold back the Lady Warriors (5-6, 0-3).

“I was just telling the girls in the locker room that they made it when they counted and it was clutch and I was proud of them for that,” said South coach Torey Haile.

The Lady Rebels (6-2, 2-0) had three players scoring in double figures, led by Kayla Tipton’s 16 points. Morgan Seymore put up 15 and Brayden Hutchins added 14.

The boys’ contest went a little more smoothly for South, which rolled to a 78-51 win.

Colton Young’s four 3-pointers were part of his team-high 16 points for the Rebels.

South (5-4, 2-0) opened a 41-26 halftime lead and continued to pad its advantage in the second half. Will Blair added 13 points and Dalton Light scored 12 for the Rebels.

Josh Hammonds and Corey Matherly led Happy Valley (1-12, 0-3) with 11 points each.
