CRYSTAL GAIL SMITH and DONALD WAYNE SNODGRASS
GATE CITY — A Southwest Virginia woman and her live-in boyfriend were indicted on felony charges Tuesday by a Scott County grand jury for allegedly abusing a then 14-month-old child to such an extent that it required medical treatment for head injuries.
Donald Wayne Snodgrass, 29, of Nickelsville, received true bill indictments on charges of aggravated malicious wounding and felony abuse and neglect of a child.
The child’s mother — Crystal Gail Smith, 22, of Nickelsville — was indicted on a single count of abuse and neglect of a child.
Arraignment dates in Scott County Circuit Court for the couple were pending Tuesday afternoon.
Scott County authorities said Snodgrass was responsible for inflicting the child’s injuries. According to medical reports, the incident left the boy with multiple skull fractures, bleeding on the brain and extensive bruising.
The charges against the boy’s mother were brought after she allegedly failed to have his injuries treated for several days after they were inflicted.
The child is currently in the care of a foster family, where he is reportedly recovering from his injuries.
Both Snodgrass and Smith were arrested in August following an investigation by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. The Scott County Department of Social Services was also involved.
Authorities allegedly discovered the abuse on Aug. 13 after being dispatched to a home on Sabras Chapel Road near Nickelsville to conduct a welfare check on Smith’s child.
