KINGSPORT -- The National Weather Service in Morristown issued a winter weather advisory Monday night for much of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
The advisory, which covers Sullivan and Hawkins counties and surrounding areas in Tennessee and Scott, Lee and Wise counties in Virginia, is scheduled to go into effect Monday at 11 p.m. and remain in place until Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Kingsport, Rogersville, Gate City, Jonesville, Wise, Norton, and Bristol, Tenn., are all included in the advisory area.
Forecasters said freezing rain will affect most of the region, although a mix of snow and freezing rain is expected in portions of Lee and Wise counties.
Forecasters expect surface temperatures to fall below freezing in the early morning hours. Ice accumulation in Sullivan County should begin around 4 a.m. The precipitation is expected to end around 11 a.m.
The weather is expected to cause hazardous driving conditions and ice accumulation on trees, powerlines and roadways -- especially bridges and overpasses.
