BLOUNTVILLE — The football field at Sullivan South High School is a step closer to being named for the school’s first football coach.
But the process of naming the field, commonly known as Death Valley, has brought to light concerns about the school system’s policy for naming facilities — or, as Board of Education member Jerry Greene said, the lack of criteria in the current policy.
The board Monday night voted 6-0, with Betty Combs abstaining, on the first of two readings to rename the South football field John Allen Compton Field after the school’s first football coach and longtime athletic director.
Combs said she wasn’t familiar with Compton’s 40 years with the school system and would like more information than what was in a May letter from South Principal Greg Harvey.
The stadium is named after Carl Matherly, but the field, other than the nickname Death Valley, has no formal name.
“It appears that anybody who makes a request (to name a facility) we’re going to approve it,” veteran school board member Jerry Greene of Bristol said. “I’m afraid this is going to get out of hand.”For an expanded version of this article, please see Monday's print edition or our expanded electronic edition.
