GATE CITY — Rotary Club members fanned out to Scott County’s 14 school campuses Thursday and Friday to deliver hundreds of pairs of shoes and socks to less fortunate children in time for Christmas.
Scott County Rotary Club member Chris Kimbler said this year’s effort raised more than $16,500 through the organization’s Shoes, Clothes and Education Fund to purchase one pair of shoes and multiple pairs of socks for almost 600 students in grades K-12.
“We got about 90 percent of them delivered Thursday and the rest Friday, so all the schools have their shoes now,” Kimbler said. “The kids were really happy to get them.”
Although he has made deliveries for several years now, Kimbler said the experience is always an emotional one.
“It gets emotional, especially around the kids that you know don’t have much, they get excited because they know they might not get much,” Kimbler said. “And the younger ones too, you can tell it brightens their day and they really enjoy it.”For an expanded version of this article, please see Sunday's print edition or our expanded electronic edition.
