JOHNSON CITY — Science Hill put the clamps on Dobyns-Bennett down the stretch to secure a key Big 7 Conference boys basketball win on Tuesday night.

The Hilltoppers held the Tribe to just one basket in the final 3:30 to escape with a hard-fought 57-53 victory. Ian Martin hit the go-ahead basket with three minutes left in the fourth quarter and Daniel Sweeney sank two foul shots with 16.5 seconds left to ice the game for the Hilltoppers.

After Science Hill took a 10-point lead with 2:26 remaining in the third quarter, D-B went on an 11-0 run to grab a 45-44 lead early in the fourth. The teams swapped the lead back and forth until Martin’s layup put the ’Toppers up for good.

Calvin Songster led Science Hill with 16 points and Peyton Wingate came off the bench and knocked down four 3-pointers to finish with 12.

John Fulkerson scored 16 points and blocked five shots for D-B.

In the girls’ contest, the Lady Hilltoppers shook off a slow start and a big game by D-B’s Sasha Morrisette to beat the Lady Indians 82-36.

Morrisette led D-B with 23 points, surpassing the 1,000-point plateau in the process. But Science Hill eventually wore down the Tribe, embarking on a 39-6 run after halftime to secure the win.

Tianna Tarter had 24 points for the Lady Hilltoppers, who knocked down 13 3-pointers as a team. Grace Herrin added 14 points for Science Hill.
