GATE CITY — A Southwest Virginia couple accused of abusing a 14-month-old child to the point it was hospitalized with skull fractures had their cases bound over to a grand jury during a preliminary hearing Monday in Scott County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Donald Wayne Snodgrass, 29, of Nickelsville, previously pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated malicious wounding of a child and a single count of felony abuse and neglect that stem from his August 2013 arrest by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
Charges against the child’s mother — Crystal Gail Smith, 22, of Nickelsville — were also bound over Monday. Smith, who was allowing Snodgrass to live with her at the time the alleged abuse occurred, was arrested on a single count of felony abuse and neglect. She has also pleaded not guilty.
Scott County Commonwealth’s Attorney Marcus McClung said the county’s next grand jury is scheduled to convene Dec. 10.
McClung declined to comment Monday on details surrounding the case, but did say the child was currently recovering from its injuries with a foster family.
