Kingsport BMA approves rezoning for gun shop

KINGSPORT — The Board of Mayor and Aldermen gave final approval to a rezoning Tuesday night, which will allow a gun shop to open across the street from Andrew Jackson Elementary School.

Freedom Firearms, located at 771 W. Stone Drive, requested a rezoning change for its property, from the current B-1 designation to B-3. Firearm sales cannot take place in a B-1 zone, but can in a B-3 zone.

The issue drew some concern from a few citizens and the BMA put the matter on hold last month, but ultimately voted to approve the rezoning change.

Planning department officials say the change will become effective in 15 days.
