A letter was hand-delivered to Wellmont Health System on Monday formally requesting the former Lee Regional Medical Center building be donated to the Lee County government no later than March 31, 2014.
The letter was sent by the Industrial Development Authority of Lee County to Wellmont’s board of directors.
“The closing of Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia ... has been a detrimental event in Lee County,” the letter stated. “Approximately 140 workers were displaced during 2013 by the reduction in services announced in May then the eventual closure of the hospital announced on September 11, 2013.”
The hospital was closed on Sept. 30.
Wellmont said in a statement they appreciated the IDA for bringing the request to their attention and planned to review it carefully.
“While we are not able to disclose the parties at this time, we have also received inquiries from others about the facility and have to balance all those interests,” the statement said. “The closure of Lee Regional Medical Center was difficult and required a great deal of deliberation. The same level of consideration will be necessary in Wellmont’s determination of the future direction of this facility.”
