Man shoots self at Kingsport Christmas tree lot

KINGSPORT — A Kingsport man is in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself on Friday afternoon, when a shotgun discharged as he retrieved a Christmas tree stand from his vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Ingles, 4317 Fort Henry Drive. Seasonal Christmas tree sales are currently operating out of the parking lot.

Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Patton says Michael H. Bledsoe, 59, had purchased a tree. He then went to his vehicle to grab a tree stand, according to Patton, and apparently shifted a 12-gauge shotgun that was in the backseat.

The gun discharged, shooting Bledsoe in the pelvis. Patton said he was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by EMS with life-threatening injuries.  As of Monday afternoon, he remained hospitalized in intensive care.
