Big Stone Gap man wins $100,000 in Virginia Lottery scratcher game

ABINGDON  —  A Big Stone Gap man has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season after winning $100,000 playing a Virginia Lottery scratcher game.

Wise County resident Brett Roberts bought the ticket recently at the Scotchman, located at 900 Gilley Ave. in Big Stone Gap.

When he first began scratching the Jewel 7s ticket, Roberts said he thought he had won $100. He was in for a shock, however, when he handed the ticket to the store clerk and learned the winning amount actually had three additional zeros.

Roberts’ winnings totaled $100,000.

While claiming the prize later that same day at the Virginia Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Abingdon, Roberts was still coming to grips with his stroke of good luck.

“I’m still kind of shaky, but I’m excited,” he said.

Roberts said his biggest challenge after scratching the winning ticket was convincing his wife that he actually won $100,000.

Roberts, who does electrical work for a living, told lottery officials he has no immediate plans for his winnings.
