WISE — The Wise County School Board on Monday agreed to open a process to accept proposals for consideration of a potential project to improve vehicular traffic patterns at its three-school complex in Big Stone Gap.
During a special session on Monday, the board voted 6-0, with two members absent, to open a 45 day period to accept proposals for consideration of moving forward with the project at some later date.
Schools Superintendent Jeff Perry told the board Monday’s vote merely opens the process to accept proposals for consideration under Virginia’s Private-Public Education and Infrastructure Act (PPEA) of 2002 and does not commit the board to a particular contract at this time.
Monday’s special session was triggered in part by an unsolicited design/build proposal from Maxim Engineering of Coeburn in partnership with W&L Construction and Paving Co. of Chilhowie.
The PPEA permits consideration of unsolicited proposals but requires a 45 day period for other companies to submit proposals as well, Perry said. For an expanded version of this article, please see Tuesday's print edition or our expanded electronic edition.
