Godsey, Anderson to face Republican challengers

BLOUNTVILLE — Two of Sullivan County’s constitutional officeholders already are facing challenges from within their own party for next year’s election.

Friday was the first day would-be candidates for county offices on the August 2014 ballot could pick up qualifying paperwork for the party primaries that pick nominees for that ballot.

Voters won’t go to the polls for those party primaries until May 6.

The filing deadline for hopefuls wanting to be on a primary ballot, however, is noon on Feb. 20.

As of Monday afternoon, two big races to watch were county mayor and county sheriff.

Mayor Steve Godsey picked up the paperwork to again seek the Republican Party’s nomination. So did his prior adversary, Mark Vance  —  a former county commissioner who ran against Godsey four years ago.
