Authorities identify man killed when truck runs into Boone Lake

PINEY FLATS — A man who was killed when his pickup ran into Boone Lake on Saturday has been identified.

According to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, David M. Shields, 57, of 302 Charlie Ave., Piney Flats, was killed in the accident.

Based on statements taken from witnesses, it appears Shields turned into his driveway and then lost control of the truck, which traveled down the driveway, through the back yard of the home, over a retaining wall and into the lake, according to a SCSO report.

Authorities found the vehicle completely underwater upon arriving at the scene. Divers with the Kingsport Life Saving Crew responded to the scene and found Shields inside the submerged vehicle, according to the report.

At this time the circumstances surrounding the crash do not appear to be suspicious. However, the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, according to the report.

The Avoca Volunteer Fire Department and the Sullivan County EMA assisted the Kingsport Life Saving Crew and SCSO on the call.
