KINGSPORT — Does the future of a comprehensive health and wellness initiative hinge on Kingsport pitching in $60,000 a year for the next three years?
A volunteer health and wellness committee that has been working on the initiative for the past three years believes so, making the sales pitch to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen last week.
The committee, Healthy Kingsport, is a group of local volunteers with representatives from city and county government and schools, local hospitals, health departments, nonprofit organizations and area businesses.
The group’s mission is to create a culture of healthy living in the community by promoting awareness, influencing policy and enhancing infrastructure. It’s primary focus will be on increased physical activity, nutrition and a reduction in tobacco use.
Roger Mowen, who chairs the committee and serves on the YMCA board, and Charlie Glass, executive director of the Greater Kingsport Family YMCA, came before the BMA last week and outlined Healthy Kingsport’s proposal for the hiring of an executive director. For an expanded version of this article, please see Sunday's print edition or our expanded electronic edition.
