UPDATE: CHPD says shooting victim was on foot when he called family for help

Updated at 7:30 p.m.

CHURCH HILL — Church Hill police are hoping to be able to speak to a St. Louis man who was shot in the back with a .45-caliber firearm Sunday night and had undergone at least two surgeries as of Monday evening.

The name of the victim hadn’t been released as of deadline Monday night.

CHPD Chief Mark Johnson said the victim was listed in critical condition, but improving, at  Holston Valley Medical Center.

“Last night our department was notified of a gunshot victim who presented at the HVMC emergency room,” Johnson said. “Our preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim was on foot on Holliston Mills Road near the 11-W intersection around 8:30 p.m. when he was struck by one .45-caliber bullet. The victim called a family member,  who came to the scene and transported him to the hospital for treatment.”

Johnson said the victim is a 28-year-old black male from the St. Louis area. He said  the man came to Church Hill last week to visit family for the holidays.

Police haven’t been able to speak to the victim. The victim apparently made statements to family members, but Johnson said he has received conflicting reports from witnesses as to what the victim said. Johnson said he was not ready to release  that information Monday night.

The victim was shot in the lower back, and there was no exit wound.

Police believe the shooting took place within 100 yards of the 11-W and Holliston Mills Road intersection.

Johnson noted that it was raining Sunday night, which made it difficult to find and collect physical evidence. There are still many unanswered questions in the investigation, Johnson said.

“Hopefully,  tomorrow or the next day he’ll be able to talk to us, and we’ll see what he has to say,” Johnson added.

Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call Johnson at (423) 357-3487,  ext. 4, and if no one answers leave a message.
