BRISTOL, Va. — In the first-ever VHSL Region 2A West Region volleyball final, Gate City dug down deep to pull out a 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 victory over John Battle on Saturday at Virginia High.
The Lady Blue Devils (28-2) advanced to the 2A Final Four as the regional champions. They’ll take on the East Region runners-up at 5 p.m. on Friday in the state semifinals at Virginia Commonwealth’s Siegel Center in Richmond.
The Lady Trojans (20-10) will meet the East Region champs at 3 p.m. that day.
By winning their West Region semifinal matches on Thursday in Appomattox, Gate City and Battle both earned automatic berths in the state 2A Final Four. The only thing at stake on Saturday night was gaining the higher seed.
It marked the sixth meeting of the year between the Mountain District schools, and the Lady Blue Devils came out on top for a sixth time. But it was far from easy.
“Mentally we weren’t where we needed to be tonight,” said Gate City coach Amy Reed. “It’s hard playing a team for the sixth time. We just weren’t fired up to play.
“We’ve got four days of practice to get our heads together before the state semifinals."
Caitlin McConnell led the Lady Blue Devils with nine kills and eight digs. Lindsey Harper added seven kills and Kyra Jessee had six.
Kerri Hite dished out 20 assists for the Lady Blue Devils.
Sara Robbins had 10 kills and Caitlyn Doss 21 assists for Battle. Daphne Hawkins added eight kills and Sara Nash had nine digs. For an expanded version of this article, please see Sunday's print edition or our expanded electronic edition.
