FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Tyler Pate hit Nick Alvaro with a 3-yard touchdown toss with 40 seconds remaining to lift Fairmont State to a 47-44 Mountain East Conference win over Virginia-Wise at Duvall-Rosier Field on Saturday.
Fairmont State (3-7, 2-7) snapped a five-game losing streak.
Cooper Hibbs passed for a season-high 309 yards for the Falcons, finding the end zone twice. Dawrence Roberts carried the ball 21 times for 103 yards.
Running back Daniel Monroe scored three times and had 17 carries for 45 yards. Kenny Washington led the FSU receiving corps with 99 yards on two catches, including a 69-yard reception. Sharmarte Banks had a team-high six catches for 55 yards on the afternoon.
Cullen LaVoi completed 24 of 45 passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Highland Cavaliers (2-9, 2-7). James Long hauled in nine catches for 187 yards and two TDs to lead the Virginia-Wise receivers.
Long broke the school’s single-season all-purpose yardage record on the game’s opening kickoff. He finished the day with 355 all-purpose yards to close with 2,304.
Zach Cochran added nine catches for 83 yards and had a team-high 26 rushing yards .
